Approaches to Deepening Personal Meaning

Adam Blatner

Abstract

This paper briefly reviews several contemporary trends that help people acquire a greater sense of personal meaning. It will show that psychotherapy has moved beyond Freud’s narrow focus on resolving infantile conflicts, and has moved towards Victor Frankl’s emphasis on personal meaning and Alfred Adler’s concept of social interest. This brief overview will serve the purpose of showing the breadth of meaning-oriented approaches to psychology and psychotherapy.
